Wammo Blog

A couple of years ago Brothers Jeff, George, and I had the very good fortune to see the Asylum Street Spankers at the Kent State Folk Festival. Incredible musicians and the funniest live act you'll ever see. So I was very happy to just now discover the A.S.S frontman Wammo has a blog. (No RSS feed, though.)

A rare serious note from T & T on Vassar Clements

Just learned from the Folk Alley newsletter of the failing health of fiddle great Vassar Clements. I first heard Vassar on the now legendary "Will the Circle Be Unbroken" album (yeah, vinyl) back in the early 70s. The roster of pickers Vassar has played with over the years is astounding. As Vassar nears the end of his long journey, one hopes he and his family take some comfort in the knowledge that the man has left his mark in the world of music.

New Troubadours of Divine Bliss CD!

Just heard from fiddler extraordinaire Steph Dlugon (who sat in with the Elderly Brothers at our inaugural gig at the Barking Spider in 2001) that the Troubadours of Divine Bliss have just released Off the Cuff, new double live CD recorded at the Winchester in Lakewood, Ohio. Steph frequently sits in with the Troubadours, and is a stunt pickers on the disc. Audio samples are available.

Buy a copy now. Go on! Do it! DO IT!

Billy Joe Shaver on PHC.

Billy Joe Shaver and his band did several tunes on A Prairie Home Companion last week. The sets are available as RealAudio streams. Great stuff.

And Sam Bush ain't no slouch, either.

Love them Gourds

A member of the Gourds' Yahoo group circulated this clip of the Gourds performing live on a rooftop for a local Austin news program. These guys make the Elderly Brothers look handsome and well-dressed. They ain't pretty, but they play real good.

Band names

This article from SFGate.com discusses the relative merits of various band names, a topic that comes up frequently at Elderly Brothers practice sessions. Among the various names we've discussed:

  • The Incontinentals

  • Pink Floyd the Barber

  • The Eagles But Not the Real Eagles

  • The FuckYous

  • Los Hermanos Borachos (Translation: The Drunk Brothers)

  • The Pacemakers, But the Kind for Your Heart, Rather Than Gerry and The Pacemakers

  • The Beertles

  • I Love You But I Have Chosen Beer

...and several others I can't recall at the moment. Maybe the other Brothers will weigh in...

Lots of free music, and it's legal

I've already mentioned the Internet Archive in several posts on this blog, but today I discovered even more great music there. The Country section includes a number of recordings dating back to the 20s and 30s. Way cool stuff, and all free and legal.

Railroad Earth Live at Black Swamp 9/10/04

Brothers Jeff, George, and I have attended the Black Swamp Arts and Music Festival two years running. It's a well run, free event that always offers an amazing roster of national bands, representing Americana and roots music. During the 2004 festival we had the pleasure of seeing RailRoad Earth perform. As luck would have it, their performance at Black Swamp was recorded, and appears on the Live Music section of the Internet Archive. Do yourself a favor and listen to this outstanding band.

(The performance can be streamed or downloaded.)

A Blast From the Past

I recently received email from a guy named Walt Kleinecke. Walt stumbled onto the Elderly Brothers website and recognized Brother Carl as a bandmate from days gone by, in an outfit called the Tulsa Jacks. Brother George tracked down this entry for the Tulsa Jacks on ClePunk, an excellent site devoted to Cleveland's not-so-distant muscial past.

Those were the days...
